Staff Spotlight: Laura Jacobs

Laura Jacobs teaches 7th grade English and conducts all Senior Seminar courses.  She points out that teaching the youngest and the oldest students at GRACE’s upper campus is “a joy only possible in our unique setting.”  Laura’s background and experience are varied, and contribute to her passion for education.

Laura earned her degree in Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  When someone at UNCW suggested a teaching career, she dismissed the idea outright.  Instead, a summer internship offered an opportunity to live in Japan and sparked an interest in travel. This led to a job with Delta airlines as a flight attendant. Laura flew all over the US, eastern and western Europe. She eventually moved into retail management and sales.  After years of ignoring the call, and seemingly “against her will,” God led Laura to teaching.  With her passion for social justice, desire to make a difference for kids, and a love of Christ, she says teaching at GRACE Christian School is the “best thing that ever happened to my teaching career.”

She met her husband at a Methodist Youth Camp at 15. They stayed in touch until their mid twenties and did not reconnect until they were 39. “The joke when we were teens was that we had to get married – My maiden name is Barbee and his name is Ken – people thought it was funny to call us Barbee & Ken.”  Laura has two children who attend GRACE.

Her favorite scripture is Isaiah 61:1-2 “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”  She notes that having faced obstacles at different times throughout her life, the idea of trading ashes for beauty – knowing God can make a “masterpiece from our mess” offers constant reassurance.

Laura has a desire to help students set and achieve their goals. It is fitting that she works with 7th graders as they begin to shape their individual identities and seniors who are entering a new chapter of their lives where they can capitalize on all they’ve learned while at GRACE.
