Transitional Kindergarten Program Overview

The Transitional Kindergarten program at GRACE began in the 2014-2015 school year.  Enrollment in this class is limited to students who are ready for more than preschool, but not yet ready for the Kindergarten curriculum due to not meeting the kindergarten age requirement or needing the extra gift of time. With a dedicated full-time teacher and teaching assistant, GRACE transitional kindergarten students receive a lot of love and attention as they develop socially and emotionally to develop foundational academic skills that will serve them well in future grades.

The cornerstone of a GRACE Elementary School education is developing a love for learning and a love for the Lord.  Bible instruction in transitional kindergarten focuses on familiar Bible lessons presented from both the Old Testament and New Testament, emphasizing God’s love. Classroom activities focus on role playing, re-enactment, and hands-on experiences to bring learning to life.

Academically, GRACE is committed to teaching foundational skills in all disciplines. In language arts, students develop phonemic awareness with a multi-sensory, kinesthetic approach to language development and extensive exposure to reading and a print rich environment. Music, movement and tactile learning are used to learn letters, sounds, names, and identification. In mathematics, students develop number sense by exploring patterns, shapes, counting, number recognition, problem solving and measuring.  Students strengthen fine motor skills with engaging and fun activities, including lessons in prewriting and handwriting instruction.

In transitional kindergarten, SMARTBoards are utilized to provide differentiated learning opportunities for students with varying learning styles and abilities.  Weekly enrichment classes include visits to the library, art, physical education, and music.  Additionally, field trips and special events allow the transitional kindergarten classroom to extend beyond the walls of school as students engage the world in which they live. Field trips and special events include community helper visitors; Pumpkin Patch field trip; Gymnastics Studio field trip; Manners Luncheon; 101 Dalmatians Day; and various concerts and school events.

All GRACE transitional kindergarten teachers are degreed and certified educators that provide appropriate academic challenge at each grade level while fostering a safe, loving, and caring environment.
